Wendell J. Stembridge
October 19, 1938 – March 18, 2026
— ✦ —
Wendell J. Stembridge, 87, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born on October 19, 1938, to Gordon and Evalyn Stembridge in Peoa, Utah, where he lived his entire life on Woodenshoe. He lived a full and hardworking life rooted in family, faith, and the land he loved. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ila; his brothers, Elden, Vern, and Melvin; and his sister, Ione.
Wendell graduated from South Summit High School and went on to dedicate his life to ranching. He took great pride in his work ethic, working for the State Road Department while running his ranch, where he raised mink and Angus cattle. His deep connection to agriculture extended beyond his own operation, as he faithfully served as an officer in the Soil Conservation District, working to preserve and protect the land for future generations.
On October 3, 1958, he married his sweetheart, Ila, in Henefer, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple in 1959. Together, they built a loving home and raised four children: Glayde (Lesa) Stembridge, of Hyde Park; LuAnn (Tyler) Page, of Kamas; Thayne (Audrey) Stembridge, of Peoa; and Stephanie (Tyler) Waters, of St. George. Wendell was the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, a legacy that continues to grow.
In 1971, Wendell and Ila built the Oakley Polar King, a dream that his father once joked would take a lot of ice cream cones to pay for. Over fifty years later, that dream has more than been realized. The Oakley Polar King has grown into a beloved community landmark, cherished by generations of locals and travelers alike — a lasting testament to Wendell and Ila's vision, hard work, and community spirit.
After the passing of Ila, Wendell later married Joyce Bates Ball, whose dedicated love, care, and service brought comfort and companionship in his later years.
Wendell had a love for rodeo and the western way of life, which was evident in everything he did. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his quiet kindness, and his unwavering devotion to his family and community. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, integrity, and deep roots in the land and people he loved.
