Rex K Hallam

After a life lived to the fullest despite the challenges he faced, Rex K. Hallam, 78, of Francis, UT passed away in his sleep at home.

He was born in Francis on March 18, 1947, to John and Elva Hallam at his grandmother’s home up the lane from where he lived for the majority of his life. He graduated from South Summit High School in 1966, after which he enjoyed a career 1966 in mining, working at the Nevada Test Site and the Park City Silver Mines. In 1976, he was paralyzed after a mine cave in.

Despite being confined to a wheelchair, he continued to train racehorses with assistance from his nephews. They ran and won races throughout Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, and Colorado. Several became barrel horses after retiring from horse racing, which led to success for many in his immediate family and other Kamas Valley young people.

Rex married Lynette Brown in Talmage, Utah on April 16, 1977. They were later sealed in the Jordan River Temple on February 18, 2022. They were blessed with one daughter Megan, who Rex strove to instill his hard working ways through horseback riding and showing sheep in livestock shows. Numerous vacations were spent going to Tooele, Vernal, and the State Fair. Through his influence and savvy with figuring out how to breed champion show lambs, numerous titles were won at the Summit County Fair by Megan.

Rex served on the Francis Town Council for several years and took pride in the parks and rodeo grounds.

Rex was an avid hunter despite his limitations and spent many years in the mountains surrounding Kamas scouting for the perfect deer or elk (and sometimes antelope in Wyoming), and did have many successes.

Rex was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Kenneth McNeil, sister-in-laws Della (Glen) Allred, Marlene (Marvin) Sorensen, and brother-in-laws, Weldon Brown, and Olen (Dixie) Thompson. He is survived by his wife, Lynette Hallam, (who served as his primary caregiver since his paralysis), daughter, Megan (Kevin) Prause, son, Roger Griffis, sisters Dixie (Olen) Thompson and Loraine (Trace) Flygare, and sister-in-law, Marilyn (Blaine) Beckstrand, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Special thanks to Audrey Stembridge, his Home Healthcare nurse and friend, for not only the medical care that she provided throughout the last years of his life, but the true friendship that she showed to Rex and Lynette. Special thanks also to the IHC Home Healthcare aides Stacy & Ashley after his shoulder replacement, as well as Kilee.

Visitation will be held at the Francis LDS Meetinghouse, located at 387 W Last Frontier Lane, Francis, Utah, on Sunday, January 11 from 6:00-8:00 pm, as well as on Monday, January 12 from 10:30-11:30. Funeral Services will follow at noon. Interment will be in the Francis Cemetery.
