Obituary

John William “Jack” Sargent, 88, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on April 4, 2026.

Jack was born at home in Hoytsville, Utah, on November 24, 1937, to Eleanor and Lorenzo “Mack” Sargent, where he was raised and lived until graduation.

From a young age, Jack loved sports and competition. He attended Weber State, where he played basketball for a short period of time before marrying the love of his life, Barbara Ann Pitt. Together, they raised 12 children in Kamas and Oakley, creating a home centered on love, hard work, and devotion to one another.

Jack was a visionary and an entrepreneur. He founded and operated Sargent Timber Company, where his creativity and resourcefulness were evident in all he did. He had a remarkable ability to take equipment and repurpose it to meet the needs of his business. He was known for his strong work ethic and determination.

He valued his membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and faithfully served in many callings throughout his life. He especially enjoyed working with the Scouts, teaching Gospel Doctrine, and serving in the temple. His faith was a guiding force and a quiet example to all who knew him.

Jack found great joy in the outdoors. He loved fishing, hunting, and spending time in the mountains. He was an avid fan of BYU sports and enjoyed watching high school and college athletics. He was a gifted storyteller, often sharing stories that brought laughter and connection to those around him.

He will be remembered for his humor and personality. Jack loved joking, teasing, and giving personal nicknames to everyone he met—a trait that endeared him to family and friends alike. His presence brought light, laughter, and a sense of belonging.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Barbara Ann Pitt; his brothers, Robert and Lorenzo; his sons, Daymon and Shawn; and his daughter, Monica.

He is survived by his children: Angie (Mike), Marya (Chad), Lezlee (Mark), Stewart, Brian, David (Clara), Steven (Paula), Paul (Ruby), and Jeff (Rashelle); as well as his brothers Lynn, Mark, and Howard Sargent. He is also survived by over 100 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His legacy will continue in the lives of those he loved, in the mountains he cherished, and in the stories that will be told for generations to come.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 10, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at the Kamas Stake Center in Marion, Utah. There will be viewing prior to the funeral service from 10:00-11:45am. A viewing will also be held Thursday from 6:00-8:00 pm.

A special thanks to Audrey and Roger for the loving care that they gave to Dad.
