John Delbert Coon, Jr., beloved father, grandfather, and friend, died peacefully in his sleep on August 22, 2026 in Salt Lake City. John was born on December 16, 1938, in Salt Lake City to Kathryn Schaffer and John Delbert Coon. He was the second of four children. As a child, he moved around frequently, but landed in Magna long enough to graduate from Cyprus High School. After graduation, John enlisted in the Navy, serving his country aboard the USS Lake Champlain. While in the service, John was trained as an electrician. He married Maridee Nisonger on July 16, 1965, in Murray, Utah. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple and were married for 38 years until her death in 2003.

After being medically discharged from the Navy during his second tour, John attended Westminster College, where he graduated with a B.S. in Economics and Business Administration. He continued working as a master electrician and was a member of the IBEW for more than 60 years. He and his growing family moved to Kamas in 1976, where he lived until his final hospitalization.

John loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. A social and caring person, he was always happy to take family and friends fishing to spread the joy. Toward the end of his life, as his mobility decreased, John spent more time on indoor activities such as reading, watching old westerns on television, and spending time with his many friends at the Summit County Senior Center and going to senior fitness classes at the recreation center in Kamas.

John was an animal lover and a long-time feral colony caretaker. At the time of his death, he had 6 cat friends. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Proceeded in death by his wife, Maridee, his brother Michael, his sister Karen, and many animal friends. John is survived by his children Michelle (Eddy), Andrea (Carsten), Sandra, John, and Joshua (Teresa), 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and his sister Carolyn.

A viewing will be held at the Kamas LDS Chapel, 100 West Center Street, Kamas, Utah, on Friday, August 28, 2026 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. A second viewing will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026 from 9:30 am to 10:45 am at the same chapel, followed by the funeral service at 11 am. Interment will follow at the Francis Cemetery.
