Our beloved mother, Hazel Jean Muller, passed away peacefully on October 12th at the age of 88 surrounded by family.
"Jean" was born and raised in Lyman Wyoming to businessman and rancher, Joe Powers, and Nellie (Fackrell) Powers Sears, later owner of the Oasis Bar and Downtown Motel in Kemmerer. She was born into the family business quite literally, entering the world in Room 2 of her parent's motel. Working from a very young age did not distract mom from her studies. Jean was the Valedictorian of her class earning a scholarship to the University of Wyoming. While in Laramie, her social life and talents eventually led to her becoming the lead singer of the band "The Dreamers". She loved performing but soon got the bug to "see the world" and left college with her best friend to work for Braniff Airlines. Mom lived for a time in New Jersey, Denver, and Ohio before deciding to complete her education at Eastern Montana College in Billings.
Posting in the Gazette was a natural choice having moved to Kemmerer in the early 70's to start her career and raise her three children. Jean taught office machines, bookkeeping and shorthand at the high school, directed several plays and escorted students on a European trip. She was active in the community and continued singing for various events. She also followed in her family's footsteps by becoming a business owner building the VILLA WEST Apartments on Main Street across from the football field. Many lifelong friendships and memories were forged in Kemmerer before retiring and moving to Utah in the late 80's.
Jean was immensely talented. Retirement allowed her hobbies to flourish which included oil painting, making quilts, and writing and illustrating three children's books. She also achieved her wish of not directing, but performing in the play Oklahoma put on by the Salt Lake Community College. Jean was goal-oriented and always searched for ways to enhance her time especially when it came to family...her greatest hobby of all.
She is survived by her children Brian Muller and Julie (Wagner) Down and her six grandchildren, Nikole and Tyler Van, Lauren, Logan and Jordan Down, and Macie Muller.
Mom was also lucky enough to have one great grandchild, Nixon Van. Jean was proceeded in death by her daughter Jaymee Grimm and siblings Joyce Rountree and Mark Powers.
A service to celebrate her amazing life will be held in Lyman at the LDS chapel 3815 State Highway 414 on Saturday, October 24th. Viewing at 12:00pm followed by the chapel service at 2pm.
