Griffin Gerhart Spalding passed away on August 23, 2026, in Salt Lake City, Utah, after a year of illness and multiple hospital admissions. Surrounded by the love of his family and under the care and guidance of his dedicated hospital team, he passed quickly and peacefully after being removed from life support. He was born on April 20, 2008, in Rock Springs, Wyoming.

Griffin’s life was marked by a sweet spirit and a remarkable ability to bring joy and light to those around him. He communicated in ways that were deeply understood by the people who loved him most, and the word “mom” was especially dear, spoken often throughout the day whenever Brandie was away. His nonverbal cues were distinctive and clear, and those closest to him knew well how to read his needs, his feelings, and his personality. Even as a teenager, he had a sense of humor all his own, with an eye roll that became one of his unmistakable expressions of sarcasm. Everyone who met Griffin could feel his kindness in his presence. His patience was one of his greatest gifts, steady and enduring.

From a very young age, Griffin showed extraordinary strength. At 10 months old, because of his complex medical conditions and violent infantile spasms, he underwent a series of steroid shots. That treatment brought meaningful change: for the first time, he was able to sleep, laugh, and truly see. Those moments became part of the story of a life lived with courage and resilience.

Griffin truly enjoyed going to school. He loved being around other children and especially cherished his teachers and nurses, including Dwan Carr, Beth Watson, Melissa Brewer, Tiffany Behunin, Kandy Douglas, and Dyan Hill. His school years at Lyman Intermediate and High School gave him connection, routine, and the companionship he enjoyed so much.

He also loved adventure and togetherness. Griffin enjoyed time in his lake raft, ranger rides through the mountains, camping trips, water park adventures, visits to Great Wolf Lodge, and time at the boat club with family while enjoying the lake. He had many adventures spelunking and road tripping, and some of his happiest moments were simply spent hanging out with his siblings. Being near them brought him immense joy.

Griffin is survived by his mother, Brandie Spalding-Olson; his step-father, Justin Olson; and his father, George Spalding. He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings, Gavin, Bowen, Charlie, Jade, and Cameron, whose bond with Griffin brought him so much happiness. He is further survived by his grandparents, Rod and Cindy Griffin, and Gerhard and Shelly Spalding. He leaves behind a family who knew the blessing of his presence and who will carry his memory with deep love.

Griffin’s life, though filled with challenges, was also filled with tenderness, laughter, adventure, and connection. He gave and received love in ways that were unmistakable, and his gentle spirit made a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
