Franklin Henry Roper

January 24, 1947 — April 13, 2025

Bellevue, Michigan

With heavy hearts, we gather to honor the life of Franklin Henry Roper, Born on January 24, 1947, into a large family of Aunts, Uncles, and cousins. He was the seventh of eleven children. Frank shared a special bond with his older brother, Leo, who passed away from injuries suffered in a 1963 car accident, never forgetting him.

From a young age, Frank displayed a curiosity and a remarkable intellect in the world of science and electricity. He loved sharing his ideas with his younger siblings, through science projects and experiments.

One of his early jobs mowing lawns at the Evanston City Cemetery allowed him to purchase electrical gadgets. He introduced his siblings to their first experience with a reel-to-reel tape recorder. Soon he would be sharing his love for country music and particularly the music of Jimmy Dean and Johnny Cash.

As an older brother, Frank treasured the time spent teaching his younger sibling’s card and board games.

During high school, Frank's woodworking skills allowed him to create beautiful lamps and tables that still serve as lasting reminders of his creativity.

In February 1965, Frank answered the call of duty by joining the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Bennington during the Vietnam War. His time in the Navy was marked by significant contributions. The ship was deployed multiple times to the 7th Fleet and participated directly in the conflict earning five battle stars for its service during the Vietnam conflict. Frank received the National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and The Republic Of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

One of the highlights of his naval career was participating in the recovery of the Apollo 4 space capsule, where he marveled at the scorched heat shields as it came aboard the ship.

Following his release from the Navy, Frank worked at various jobs as an electrician spending most of his Adult life in Michigan.

His journey through life included a marriage to Joanne Moore Roper. They were later divorced. From this union he became a proud father to Thomas Leo Roper. He often spoke of the love and admiration for his son.

Frank is survived by his Son, Tom (Michelle) Roper, two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two sisters, five brothers, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews who will carry his memory in their hearts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James W. and Lavina D. Roper, his grandson, Curtis James Roper, his brothers, Wallace Leo Roper and James Oliver Roper, and his sister, Deloris Ramon.
