Edmund Reed (Ted) Crittenden, age 99 ½, passed away on the morning of October 1, 2026, surrounded by his children. He was born March 24, 1927 at his grandparents ranch in Hoytsville, Utah; to his parents, Nellie Leon Rees and Chauncey Arland Crittenden, with big sister Fern, and big brothers Kay and Lloyd.
Ted proudly joined the United States Navy at age 17, serving during WW II and until he was honorably discharged in January 1948. He returned to Hoytsville, where he had spent his youth, and began dating Pauline Brown. They were married on December 1, 1948 in the Salt Lake City, Utah LDS Temple. He always cherished the fact that Apostle Spencer W Kimball performed their ceremony.
Ted and Pauline welcomed five children, Ronald, Norman, Kendall, DeAnn, and Cindy. Ted and Pauline raised their family in Hoytsville, except for a short time at Hewletts Ranch in Woodland, Utah. Ted and Pauline also made room in their hearts and home for foster sons Angus Snow and Harris Linford.
There is not ink enough to write of all of the adventures, talents explored, fishing trips taken, and occupations practiced to provide for his family that he packed into his 99 years of living. To name a few, he was taxidermist, prolific gardener, always a joke to share, custom mower before the job was named, farmer, craftsman, milk man, people person, (he never met a stranger), skunk whisperer, maintenance man, fisherman, perhaps fish whisperer, life story writer, woodburning and carving artist, story teller, BYU football fan, nature lover and photographer, bird feeder enthusiast, did we say fisherman?, tomato greenhouse farmer, oh, and fisherman.
As a life long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, dad shared his testimony with many in word and in deed. He served where asked, to mention a few; Scouts, High Council, Bishopric and as a Temple Worker at the Salt Lake Temple, driving in the wee hours two mornings a week, rain, snow, or shine, for 16 plus years. He supported 8 children on their missions. He served in his community as School Board member and other civic service.
Ted's wife Pauline became ill and for several years he lovingly cared for her before her passing in February of 1983. Ted later met and married JoAnn Leithead in July 1983, and dedicated himself to helping raise her 7 young children, giving his sincere best for the next 43 plus years.
Ted is survived by Norman (JaNene) of Hoytsville, Utah, Kendall (Linda) of Heber City, Utah, DeAnn (Kim Witt) of Star, Idaho, Cindy (Kim Odekirk) of Ogden, Utah, and daughter in law Sandy (Ronald) of Heber City, Utah; brothers in law Garry, Donald, Rodney, Richard, and Paul Brown, 32 grandchildren, 93 great-grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by his step-children Joel (Cheryl) Leithead, Tracy (Keith)Wood, Lance (Amy) Leithead, Lorin (Liz) Leithead, Jill (Bart) Wanstrom, and Jay (Katie) Leithead and and their 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Ted is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, his wife, Pauline and son Ronald, and grandson Tony Jason; his wife JoAnn and stepson Nathan.
Ted moved into Spring Gardens Assisted Living in Heber City, Utah in January 2026, making new friends and feeling very welcome. We would like to sincerely thank all of their kind and compassionate caregivers, as well as Peak Hospice. We would like to thank Hoytsville Ward for their open arms and kindness in helping us with dads funeral and lunch.
Ted has many lifelong wonderful friends who have really blessed his life, you know who you are. We are grateful for the ways you enriched his life.
Funeral Service for Ted will be Monday October 12 at noon. Viewing will be Sunday Evening, 6:30 to 8:30 and Monday 10 to 11:45. Burial will follow the funeral at the Hoytsville Cemetery.
Events will all be in the Hoytsville Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Hoytsville, Utah. The address is 1095 South Hoytsville Road, (Highway 189) Coalville, Utah. Due to road construction, it is easier to exit at Coalville rather than Wanship.
