Carol Buckley

September 18, 1931 — August 22, 2020

Lyman

Carol Joy (Wirig) Buckley, 88, died August 22, 2020, in Lyman, Wyoming. She was born on September 18, 1931, in Evanston, Wyoming, a daughter of Frank Earl and Maude Annie (Hutchinson) Wirig and the younger of two children.

Carol graduated from Evanston High School and the University of Wyoming, where she received dual Bachelor of Science degrees with Honors in Home Economics and Nursing. Upon graduation, she worked as a nurse at the Uinta County Memorial Hospital. She met the love of her life—Jack H Buckley—at an Evanston street dance. They married in the Logan Utah Temple on June 27, 1955. The newlyweds moved to Laramie so Jack could complete his Agricultural Education degree at the University of Wyoming. Meanwhile, Carol taught classes in the university’s college of nursing and worked part-time as a graduate nurse at Ivinson Memorial Hospital.

After Jack’s graduation, they moved to Manila, Utah, where Carol was hired as the acting director of the Daggett County Health Department. She also taught a combined 2nd-3rd grade elementary class. The Buckley family moved to Lyman, Wyoming, in 1961. Carol was hired by Uinta County School District #6 where she taught kindergarten and 5th grade at Lyman Elementary School, and junior high English and reading. She was employed as district school nurse for thirteen years and district library media specialist at Lyman High School from 1969 to 1994. Carol was selected as the Wyoming Young Educator of the Year in 1966.

An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Carol served in many callings and could often be found ministering to those in her ward and community. Carol and Jack served together in the Philippines Quezon City Mission.

Carol touched countless lives through her teaching, nursing, church, and community service. Her infectious smile, generous hugs, and genuine “I love you’s” expressed to family and friends stand as a memorial to this amazing and talented woman.

Carol is survived by her brother Frank Harold Wirig and her six children: John William Buckley (Diane), Jill (Steve Neff), Heidi (Mark Jaggi), Mark Wirig Buckley, Michael Duke Buckley (Geeta), Jay Harry Buckley (Becky); 23 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Carol was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Interment will be in the Lyman Cemetery under the arrangements of the Crandall Funeral Home. https://www.crandallfhevanston.com/listings.
